This message from LWV-WC President Joan Sampieri explains what's included:
Two clear challenges to voters’ ability to exercise their right to vote determined the need for this special edition of the newsletter. First, more than 200 pieces of legislation affecting voting have been introduced into the Michigan House and Senate. Secondly, a petition is currently circulating in Michigan communities.
In the view of the League of Women Voters of Michigan and of the League of Women Voters of Washtenaw County, both of these efforts will severely restrict what we as voters determined was the right amount of voting access with careful procedures for ensuring no voter fraud when we adopted Proposal 3 in 2018 with nearly 67% of those who voted supporting it. T
The first article, What’s Black & White & Should Be Read All Over?, contains education about the state legislation, the petition, some background on the National Popular Vote Compact, and updates on federal voting rights proposals.
The second article, LWVMI Opposes Proposed Initiative Petition, “Secure MI Vote”, is a brief explanation of the League’s position on the petition and actions you can take. Within the next week, we’ll be offering you a public service announcement you can watch that will walk you through the language and meaning of the petition.
