Back to the 70s / Feasts and Politics

By Linda Moon

Ever have a craving for mid-century cuisine, along with Carter era political satire an fascinating trivia? Look no further than The People's Choice Bicentennial Cookbook, published by the Orange County League of Women Voters in 1976. Recipes from League members, elected officials and local notoriety including, Bisque of Broccoli (Jeanette Turk, President LWV-Orange County), Trabuco Burgoo(Jim Sleeper, Orange County Almanac) and Political Pilaf (Helen Fisher, LWV Anaheim-Garden Grove) were served up along with Political Pie (Samuel Salkin, Director of the Serrano Irrigation District - See below).

Local information tidbits were served up too. Perhaps you didn't know that Laguna Canyon was never part of California land grants and that land south of Laguna Canyon could be homesteaded by planting a crop of eucalyptus trees (many which remain today) as boundaries.

The People's Choice Cookbook will be made available for viewing and photographing whenever Lunch with the League resumes. In the meantime, feel free to contact lsstanley58 [at] outlook.com (Linda Moon) for League published recipes for your favorite comfort foods.
