This month’s “Major Leaguer” is Dorothy "Dottie" Hildebrandt, a long-time Roselle resident who is one of our newer LWVRB members. Dottie hails from Schuyler, NE. She graduated from Valparaiso University with a degree in Education, and moved to Roselle in 1960 where she raised three children with her husband Dan. Dottie was the Business Manager at Trinity Lutheran Church and School until 1995. Before that, Dottie was employed as a homebound tutor for Lake Park High School. She is an active community volunteer.
1) How did you hear about the League of Women Voters of Roselle-Bloomingdale?
I have been aware of LWV for a long time—attending candidate nights.
2) Was there a particular issue or situation that prompted you to join League?
I joined the league in 2020 because of my interest in voting rights, voting information, and voting registration. As a lifelong voter and an election judge for 30 years, this is important to me.
I am a member of the committee studying school consolidation.
3) What other local volunteer activities have you been or are you involved in?
I have been a volunteer board member for church organizations both local and national. At this time my volunteer activity is participation in a volunteer tutoring service.
4) How do these activities interact with what you do at LWV, and vice versa?
They really don't; League is a refreshing contrast to my other volunteer activities.
5) Have you read the League positions on your areas of interest?
Yes. I appreciate the fact that the League is non-political. Having read League positions, I also appreciate that it encourages changes that would possibly improve our community like local mental health service and school consolidation.
6) What are your individual goals as a League member?
I wanted to be helpful in my community and to contribute to positive change.
7) Have your views on League changed over time?
No. I had a good idea of what LWV was about, and it has met those expectations.
8) What legacy are you helping the League of Women Voters leave to our community?
To disseminate valuable information to voters and to be involved in special community projects.
