LWVOA and New Citizen Voter Registration
LWVOA partners with two local non-profit organizations that have the USCIS's (US Citizenship and Immigration Services) and the court's (United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan) permission to coordinate nonpartisan voter registration at the naturalization ceremonies.
The ceremonies are conducted at the Theodore Levin Federal Courthouse in Detroit, Michigan. At each ceremony, the organizations are invited to address the new citizens about the voter registration process and provide an opportunity to register.
Ceremonies are conducted four times a week, on Mondays and Thursdays at 10:30 am and 2:00 pm. Shifts are 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Parking is available across the street from the court and is reimbursed.
This volunteer opportunity is very rewarding and a great way to participate in democracy.
