Join the LWVH Book Club where we will discuss And There Was Light: Abraham Lincoln and the American Struggle, by Jon Meacham, Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer. A president who governed a divided country has much to teach us in a twenty-first-century moment of polarization and political crisis.
Meacham chronicles the life and moral evolution of Lincoln and explores why and how Lincoln confronted secession, threats to democracy, and the tragedy of slavery in order to expand the possibilities of America...This book tells the story of Lincoln from his birth on the Kentucky frontier in 1809 to his leadership during the Civil War to his tragic assassination. It includes his rise, his self-education through reading, his loves, his bouts of depression, his political failures, his deepening faith, and his persistent conviction that slavery must end.
You don't have to be a League member to attend! Please RSVP by emailing Kathy at: Kathy_Batt [at] yahoo.com, who will send you the location of our meeting. Our meetings are informal and are usually at someone's home with snacks and wine.
In our Book Club we usually read about current political issues, biographies of world leaders, political history and social studies.
