Join us! We'll be discussing the 2025 book, Paper Girl: A Memoir of Home and Family in a Fractured America by Beth Macy. It explores the decline of her Ohio hometown, Urbana, examining how economic shifts, the opioid crisis, and political polarization have impacted the community and her own family. The memoir blends personal narrative with journalism, as Macy revisits her past as a paper girl to understand the societal forces that have created division, poverty, and a mental health crisis, while also searching for hope and connection.
Beth Macy's 2018 book, Dopesick: Dealers, Doctors, and the Drug Company that Addicted America was named one of the 100 Notable Books by The New York Times Book Review and made the year-end "best-of" lists of the Washington Post and the Chicago Tribune. It was a NewYork Times best seller and received the 2018 Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Science and Technology.
