The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan political organization, encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy.

  

LWV Charleston Area is not taking a position on this referendum. We offer this nonpartisan voter information ‘explainer’ to outline key arguments for and against, and to point voters to resources for their own investigation prior to casting their ballots in November.

Misinformation and disinformation are two of the most insidious tools used to undermine our democracy and that the proliferation of information sources – particularly on social media – requires voters and the general public to develop a new set of media literacy skills.

There are clear disconnects between SC public opinion and legislative action. When a representative sample of the South Carolina public is directly asked to share their opinions about issues, we can see many opinions do not match the content of the bills and regulations that are passing through the SC legislature and being endorsed by the governor. There is middle ground in South Carolina, but it is being ignored. This white paper takes a look at some of these issues and explores the reasons this has happened.
