Observer Corps volunteers attend public government meetings in Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester Counties and keep the League connected to community issues and leaders.

All members of the LWVCA are encouraged to become Observer Corps Volunteers. You will receive training and may be placed with a partner for meetings.
In addition to observing local government meetings, there will be opportunities for agenda watching, developing FOIA/Sunshine training materials, and considering which governmental bodies to prioritize. Anyone who is interested in learning more about their local government will greatly benefit from becoming an Observer, and in turn, you will provide a vital community service.
Our Observer Corps has an important role to play in keeping LWVCA membership informed and connected to local officials and in helping identify community needs and policy issues that may need League advocacy.
Members considering becoming Observer Corps Volunteers may wish to consider:
- Areas and subjects of special interest.
- Councils and boards that are working on LWV priority issues
- Geographic proximity (close to home, in same district, etc.).
- Degree of time commitment. Historically, volunteers cover the same meetings over a period of time (ex. James Island Town Council meetings). This approach helps strengthen knowledge about issues, and familiarity with officials and opinion leaders being observed. However, there are times when we may need volunteers to cover just one or two meetings where specific priorities are being discussed.
