Observer Corps

Observer Corps volunteers attend public government meetings in Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester Counties and keep the League connected to community issues and leaders.

All members of the LWVCA are encouraged to become Observer Corps Volunteers.

Volunteers attend meetings of a government group or community entity that they are interested in, such as city councils, school boards or county councils. The Corps has an important role to play in keeping LWVCA membership informed and connected to local officials and to help identify community needs and policy issues that we may need League advocacy. If you'd like more information, email Kristen French at frenchKL [at] gmail.com.

Members considering becoming Observer Corps Volunteers may wish to consider:

  • Areas and subjects of special interest.
  • Geographic proximity (close to home, in same district, etc.).
  • Degree of time commitment. Volunteers generally plan to cover the same meetings over a period of time (ex. James Island Town Council meetings). This approach helps strengthen knowledge about issues, and familiarity with officials and opinion leaders being observed. Generally speaking, time commitments are relatively minimal as many boards and groups meet monthly or even periodically.

Tips for Observers

Observer Corps Volunteers will be interested in these helpful tips & guidelines. They will provide assistance for volunteers in organizing for meeting attendance, meeting situations and report preparation and submission. Additionally, volunteers may meet or discuss Observer Corps involvement as often as needed by emailing Kristen French: frenchKL [at] gmail.com.
