Wednesday, March 15, 2023 - 6:00pm to 7:00pm
LWVCA will host a virtual event designed to help South Carolina citizens to better understand the operations of the state legislature. This Connects event, provided under the umbrella of the LWV Charleston area's Good Governance and Ethics team, is the first to be offered in 2023.
The featured speaker will be Theresa Arnold, a healthcare expert with a deep understanding of the operations of the SC Legislature. The event is free and open to the general Charleston public, local and state LWV members, legislators, and students.
We will explore the following topics:
- How does the Legislature operate?
- Who represents us, in terms of careers represented, background, ethnicity and gender? Does the scheduling of the legislative sessions and the compensation offered to legislators impact who is able to serve in this role?
- How does a bill become law in South Carolina? Ms. Arnold will provide health care examples to describe the law-making process.
- Case studies of other states who have made changes to the compensation of legislators and the resulting impact on diversity within their legislatures.
We hope you will join us for this enlightening conversation!
