LWV of the Charleston Area will co-host a local documentary screening of "I, Too" followed by Q&A with the film's visionary Dr. Carol Anderson in conversation with Dr. Felice Knight, Director of Education at the International African American Museum.
HumanityinAction.org notes that in "'I, Too', we embark on a journey to shine a light on stories that reveal how we reached this inflection point in American history, as we strive to narrow the gap between who we say we are as a nation ... and who we actually are." The film showcases painful and uncomfortable chapters in American history - including untold stories of racial violence in the Carolinas - while challenging us to use our power and participation to fight for a better future.
Dr. Carol Anderson is the Robert W. Woodruff Professor of African American Studies at Emory University. She is the author of White Rage: The Unspoken Truth of our Racial Divide, a New York Times bestseller; Eyes Off the Prize: The United Nations and the African American Struggle for Human Rights, 1944-1955; and One Person, One Vote: How Voter Suppression is Destroying our Democracy, which was long-listed for the National Book Award. Her latest book is The Second Race and Guns in a Fatally Unequal America (2021).
This event is open to the public. Admission is free, although a 'pay what you will' donation is appreciated. A $10 contribution is suggested.
Note: Guests who do not register for tickets in advance may come to the theater before showtime. They will be seated on a first-come basis only if seats remain after ticketholders are admitted. This hour-long documentary film was co-produced with the Bertelsmann Foundation and Humanity in Action, with generous support from the Donner Foundation.
