A Fair Courts End Gerrymandering Rally was held in Whitewater on Friday, January 21. Midge Gill (featured in the photo with the flag behind her) was one of 70 people who braved the frigid temperatures. She spoke on behalf of the League of Women Voters - Whitewater Area. Midge stressed the fact that the League has supported regularly scheduled apportionment based on population equality, contiguity of districts, representation of diverse populations, and recognition of community of interest as defined by town, village and major geographical characteristics during her speech.
Without fair maps, our representatives are more responsible to their political party than to the voters because the party draws the boundaries. Voters lose their voice and have no way to hold their legislators accountable, and elected officials have no reason to attend public forums or debates.
Janis Ringhand, State Senator from District 15, Don Vruwink, Assemblyman from District 43, Brian Holt, County Supervisor from District 3, and Susan Adams from the LWV - Beloit also spoke for the need for Fair Maps.
The Whitewater event was one of 18 locations across the state to rally for Fair Maps in Wisconsin on that day.
