From 12 noon to 6 PM on September 22, 2020 the Whitewater Area League participated in our first Voter Information Drive Through in a Cravath Lakefront Parking Lot. A total of 17 volunteers helped in a plethora of ways big and small. We were one of 4,500 community partners nationwide who helped get the word out about voter registration. There were 1.5 million new or updated voter registrations on that day alone.
Our humble League can take credit for 2 of those updated registrations. In the course of 6 hours, 4 cars drove through. A total of 24 voters were assisted and provided with all sorts of voter information. It turned out that the walker and bicycle traffic in the park was at an all-time high on that beautiful sunny day.
While our registration numbers were low, the exposure alone was amazing. We had signs on all the major roads and the Fort Atkinson radio interview reached an untold number of listeners. We had top billing on the Whitewater Banner for two days plus all the local newspapers provided coverage. What an incredible reminder to all citizens that voting is an essential activity of our democracy.
A special thanks to all who assisted in this effort. Your enthusiasm and interest was inspiring not only to me but to our entire Whitewater community.
