The Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee of the League of Women Voters Whitewater Area will hold the first of three Book Club discussions on our fall book selection, America, U.S.A.: How Race Shadows the Nation’s Anniversaries by Eddie S. Glaude Jr., on Wednesday evening, September 9th, 6:30PM-8:00PM, at The Whitewater Public Library, 431 W Center St, in Whitewater.

In America, U.S.A., celebrated public intellectual Eddie S. Glaude Jr. delivers a powerful, devastatingly candid analysis of the United States’ historic milestone birthdays across 250 years of history. From the Centennial to the Semiquincentennial, Glaude demonstrates how the country turns a blind eye to historical evils during periods of celebration, retreating into comforting national myths instead of executing an honest racial reckoning. Utilizing a rich combination of insights from figures like W.E.B. DuBois, John Dos Passos, and Martin Luther King Jr., the text challenges us to discard false innocence to help achieve a truly just democracy.

Our discussion on September 9th will cover the introduction through Chapter 3. SAVE THE DATES - additional discussions will be held on October 7 (Interlude-Chapter 5) and November 11 (Interlude - Conclusion) at the same time and location.

Books can be sourced through the local library catalog system or favorite book retailers.

The LWV Book Club was formed to help our members and friends engage in meaningful discussions of current notable books dealing with public policy issues of interest to the League.  You do not need to be a member of the League to participate and refreshments will be served.
