On Jan. 28, 2023, the League of Women Voters - Whitewater Area hosted a candidate forum for the Whitewater Unified School District School Board candidates. Nearly 40 people were in attendance. A recording is now available on Vimeo, thanks to Whitewater Community TV.
Ten of the eleven active candidates participated: Thayer A. Coburn, Will Dammeir (Delavan), Daniel Dern, Stephanie Hicks, Lisa Huempfner, Joseph A. Kromholz, Christy Linse (Fort Atkinson), Chuck Mills, Brian Schanen, and John D. Truesdale. Michael Bergman (Delavan) indicated he would be unable to attend due to a conflict. Unless otherwise noted, candidates live in Whitewater.
League member Lynn Binnie moderated the forum. The questions asked were pulled from those submitted by the audience. Some of which included, what is one thing you are proud of in the WUSD, what barriers to student and teacher success will you work to eliminate, what would you do to retain and attract good teachers, and how do you propose to make all students feel safe and welcome. A total of six questions were asked during the two-hour forum.
The six candidates receiving the most votes in the February 21 primary will appear on the ballot for the April 4 spring general election. Voters are encouraged to watch the forum to make six informed choices on Election Day!
The League also intends to sponsor a March school board candidate forum in advance of the April 4 election.
