Observing Your Governobserver graphicment in Action - Protecting Your Right to Know

League members participated a discussion of the Observer Program for Governmental Agencies/boards serving the 9 Bay Area counties. We also encouraged League member participation in observing government agencies/boards that correspond to their local League's geographies. Recorded October 19th from 6:30pm to 7:30pm.

The discussion included:

  • What is an Observer Corp and what are the mechanics?
  • Which Regional governments/agencies need observers.
  • How government transparency (sunshine) is integral to the health of our democracy.
  • What goals of our LWVBA Observer Corp will have the greatest impact?
  • Review the issues LWVBA be monitoring and how we measure success and make a difference.

In 2019 the California legislature established the Bay Area Housing Finance Authority (BAHFA) via AB 1487. BAHFA has regional revenue generating authority that enables it to work collaboratively with all Bay Area jurisdictions.

At the 2022 Convention, members voted for a re-study of the LWVBA Regional Government position and a review of other positions. A Regional Government study committee will be formed, to be led by Board member Kathleen Cha.
