The League of Women Voters of Monterey County will present a free talk titled: "Big Sur Land Trust- Projects and Progress" at an in-person "Lunch and Learn" Meeting at noon on Wednesday, January 8, 2025.

Big Sur Land Trust is a non-profit organization with a mission to inspire love of land across generations, conservation of our unique Monterey County landscapes, and access to outdoor experiences for all. Big Sur Land Trust was founded in 1978, when a dozen Big Sur residents came together over potluck dinners and coffee  for the conservation of the lands they loved. Since then, our generous donors and partners have conserved over 45,000  acres throughout Monterey County.

Over the past 46 years, the work has expanded. This expansion is exemplified by large-scale multi-faceted projects such as the Ensen Community Park project, which will bring much needed open space and a restored wetland to the heart of Salinas. The Carmel River  Floodplain Restoration and Environmental Enhancement (CR FREE) project, and the co-management of  Basin ranch with the Esselen Tribe of Monterey County.

Our presenter will be Jeannette Tuitele-Lewis the BSLT President/CEO. Jeannette Tuitele-Lewis has served in various land conservation roles for more than two decades. In 2014 she became  Big Sur Land Trust’s President and CEO. Under her leadership BSLT has doubled its operations and expanded its  programs and partnerships with a greater focus on community-centered land-based projects that meet multiple  conservation and social benefits.  Prior to coming to BSLT, she worked for Sierra Foothill Conservancy for nine years, serving as executive director for the  last five. During her tenure, the organization reached significant land conservation goals, developed working  partnerships with tribes and became Land Trust Alliance accredited.
