The League of Women Voters of Monterey County will present a free talk titled: "The 'monster' El Niño and what it could mean for us here on the Monterey Peninsula" at noon on Wednesday November 11, 2026.

On September 21, 2026 Governor Gavin Newsom posted the following: “I'm declaring a state of emergency to mobilize state resources for a potentially historic El Niño winter in California. With higher risks of heavy rain, flooding, and mudslides over the next several months, we're launching a whole-of-government effort to protect Californians.”  What exactly is an El Nino, what is it about the present one that makes it potentially historic, and what does all of this mean for us here on the Monterey Peninsula?

These questions and more will be addressed by our guest speaker, Dr. Warren Blier.  Warren has a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science from the University of Washington and was an Assistant Professor of Atmospheric Dynamics at UCLA.  He served for more than 25 years as the NOAA/National Weather Service Science and Operations Officer for the greater San Francisco and Monterey Bay Regions.  Warren retired in 2023 and does everything from calling contra dances to Sierra Club environmental advocacy in his free time, along with continuing to  pursue his lifelong passion for weather and climate.
