The League of Women Voters of Monterey County will present a free talk titled: "The Monterey County Grand Jury"" at its in- person Annual Meeting and  "Lunch and Learn"  at 11:15 am on Wednesday, May 8, 2024.
 
Guest Speakers, Tom M. Mastre and Maria A. Y. Garcia will discuss the workings of the Monterey County Civil Grand Jury. Responsibilities of Civil Grand Juries include examining all aspects of county government, all municipalities, and special districts, to ensure that the County is being governed honestly and efficiently and that County funds are being handled appropriately. It undertakes investigations on its own initiative, but also encourages residents to submit written complaints. 
 
Maria Garcia, a Marina resident, served on the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 Civil Grand Juries, and was appointed Foreperson during both terms.Garcia was instrumental in bringing back the Monterey County Chapter of the Civil Grand Jury Association.
 
Tom Mastre volunteered for the 2020–2021 Monterey County Civil Grand Jury. He has been active in the Civil Grand Jury Association of Monterey County, and is its current President.
 
The "Lunch and Learn" Meeting will be held at at the Unitarian Universalist Church, Registration at 11:15, Annual Meeting starts at 11:45, Lunch is at 12:15, and Program at 12:30.
 
Lunch costs $25 per person and payment is at the door by cash or check. Lunch includes grilled salmon, rice, Greek salad, hummus, pita bread, fruit and baklava for dessert. Catering by Chef Faris Nimry, International Cuisine of Pacific Grove.
