Presentation on Roadmap to Civilian Oversight of the Sheriff's Department

Wednesday, March 12, 2025 - 12:00pm
The League of Women Voters of Monterey County will present a talk titled "Roadmap to Civilian Oversight of the Sheriff's Department", featuring guest speaker Mike Gennaco, on March 12th, at 12 noon on Zoom.

The sheriff’s department has responsibility for protecting people and property, running the county jail, and addressing issues such as immigration, mental illness, and the unhoused in large parts of our county.  Monterey County’s Board of Supervisors has joined other counties in the state in considering civilian oversight of the Sheriff's Department.

Mike Gennaco, California’s foremost expert on policing and accountability, will lay out a roadmap for civilian oversight of our sheriff’s department. Mr. Gennaco is a former Chief of the Civil Rights Section for the US Attorney’s Office in the Central District of California and is among the nation’s foremost experts in civil rights and law enforcement. He has contributed to numerous reforms and has worked to bridge the gap between law enforcement and the communities they serve.
