Celebrating 100 years, 19th Amendment

Previous Events:

Virtual Happy Hour with Dogfish Head Brewery

LWVDE, in coordination with Dogfish Head Brewery, sponsored a virtual Happy Hour to celebrate the anniversary of the 19th Amendment at 5 p.m. on August 26 via Zoom and broadcast on our Facebook page.  Gwendolyn Miller (President of LWV Sussex) served as “Toastmaster” and introduced special female guests who will offer toasts to the 19th Amendment anniversary.  Dogfish Head Brewery released its 19th Amendment brew in honor of the occasion.  Check out the video of the event on LWVDE YouTube site.

 Dogfish Head Brewery announced that they were developing the special beer to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th amendment on 2/14.  The LWVSC had suggested the idea and the Dogfish Head Ambassador, Bryan Selders, made the announcement at the LWVDE 100th Birthday Celebration.  For a video of that announcement, click here.

The ale is being brewed by an all-female staff.  It has yet to be named but the league will be involved in that process.    

19th Amendment Women's Celebration March

On Sunday, March 8, 3 p.m., there was a celebratory march on The Circle in Georgetown to honor all women in celebrating International Women's Day and the Centennial of the 19th Amendment ratification. This celebratory march honored all women while celebrating a historic milestone.  It was sponsored by the Freeman Stage and commemorated the suffragettes who marched for women to have the right to vote.  The LWVSC promoted and participated in the event.

Speakers Panel: Votes for Women 100 Years Later and Beyond

The LWVSCDE participated in this event presented by the Freeman Stage on March 3rd at 1pm at Delaware Technical Community College, Georgetown. Speakers discussed the importance of the 19th Amendment's ratification and its impact and aftermath over the past 100 years.  They addressed how the 19th Amendment continues to make changes for women and what we can anticipate in the next 100 years for women and the USA.  It was generously sponsored by Delaware Tech.

Book Discussion

The LWVSCDE held a book discussion on Saturday, February 22nd, Lewes Public Library. The selected book, "The Women's Hour, The Great Fight To Win The Vote" by Elaine Weiss, is about the suffragists' hard fought battle for the passage of the 19th amendment. 

Documentary Film

The League of Women Voters of Sussex County and the Sussex County (DE) Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., presented a compelling film documentary, "Dignity & Defiance: a Portrait of Mary Church Terrell", on February 22nd at the Seaford Public Library at 11am. A brief discussion followed the film. Mary Church Terrell (1863-1954) was an African American, educator, writer, suffragist, and civil rights activist who championed racial equality and women’s suffrage in the late 19th and early 20th century.  

LWVDE 100th Birthday Celebration

The League of Women Voters of Delaware hosted a celebration of the League's 100th birthday at the Rehoboth Beach Historical Society Museum in Rehoboth Beach from 5 to 7pm on February 14th.  The featured speaker, Dr. Cynthia Newton, Chair of the Political Science Department at Wesley College, presented "From Civil Disobedience to the Ballot Box," setting the stage for the League's centennial theme, "Women Power the Vote."  A reception followed.

"Celebrating 100 Years:  Revisiting the Women's Suffrage Movement with '2020' Hindsight"

At the LWVSC semi-annual meeting on November 14, Lora Englehard from Delaware Humanities presented "Celebrating 100 Years: Revisiting the Women's Suffrage Movement with '2020' Hindsight", focusing on forgotten leaders who were not included in history books because of their gender or race. 

“Dignity & Defiance: a Portrait of Mary Church Terrell” 

The League of Women Voters of Sussex County  and the Sussex County (DE) Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., presented a compelling film documentary on the life of Mary Church Terrell, an African American suffragist and civil rights activist, on October 13th at the Rehoboth Beach Library.
