Committees

For all Committees below, the work is done with the help of volunteers willing to spend time
with these different voter education efforts. If you are interested in helping with any of these,
please send an email to lwvoffc [at] gmail.com, and put the committee’s name and the name of the chair in your subject line, or list more than one in the email itself.

Voter Services: Nannette Hobson, Lauri Gross

  • During election season:
    • Schedule candidate forums
    • Create the Voters' Guides
    • Distribute GO VOTE yard signs
  • When it’s not election season:
    • Register people to vote at community events
    • Register people to vote at local high schools and/or colleges
    • Present the League’s “Why Your Vote Matters” presentation or other info to community groups, as needed
  • All years: Serve as LWVFC liaison to County Board of Elections

Treasurer: Sue Kunkel 

  • File IRS tax forms and state compliance documents
  • Process all incoming dues and donations
  • Verify and pay all bills
  • Prepare annual budget and monthly treasurer's report
  • Comply with annual audit requests
  • Communicate with the board about all financial matters
  • Manage investments

Website, FB, Other social media: Kate Jones

  • Monitor activity on the League’s social media and website
  • Post information as requested
  • Work with LWVFC president and Board on using new tools for the work we do

Community events: Sue Kunkel

  • Monitor upcoming community events through local newspapers, social media, websites of local government and community groups, etc.
  • Notify LWVFC board of opportunities for the League to get involved - such as having an info table at First Saturday events, register voters, make presentations about the importance of voting, etc.
  • Recruit members to represent LWVFC at community events - hand out League info, inform people about the Voters’ Guide, help them register to vote, etc.
  • Track and manage events and volunteers who will work at the events

Membership: Jill Griffith

  • Update new-member orientation materials
  • Provide new members with welcome/orientation materials
  • Plan periodic new-member events to acquaint new members with League activities and opportunities to get involved
  • Help ensure LWVFC is fully utilizing membership tools from LWVUS

Secretary: Rosanne Roe

  • Take minutes of board meetings
  • Seek president input for edits to minutes
  • Note: we have a secretary but new members are welcome to be a fill-in if our secretary is unavailable, and also to shadow current secretary to learn the job

Newsletter: Lauri Gross 

  • Monitor League activities by attending board meetings or reading board meeting minutes as well as the League website and social media accounts
  • Take  input from board members about items that should be included in the newsletter.
  • Write, distribute and post the newsletter.

Ethics Committee: Mary Sue Krause 

  • Serve as the League’s liaison to the Fredreick County Ethics Board.
  • A member of the LWVFC board has served as the Chair of the Nominating Committee of the Frederick County Ethics Commission since 2017. The Nominating Committee for the Frederick County Ethics Commission includes community leaders from Hood College, the Rotary Club of Frederick, the faith community and more. The Frederick County Ethics Commission administers the County's Ethics Ordinance by encouraging and enforcing compliance by Frederick County officials and employees. The duties of the Ethics Commission include making determinations on alleged violations of the Ordinance, granting or denying exceptions to the Ordinance, giving advisory opinions on application of the Ordinance, and recommending Ordinance changes to the County Governing Body.

Publicity: Lauri Gross

  • Secure FNP assistance with distributing the Voters’ Guide in printBrainstorm for stories to send to the FNP and other local news outlets
  • Maintain, build and update the League press list - radio, TV, print, social mediaField inquiries from local press
  • Distribute League news to local press
  • Secure FNP assistance with distributing the Voters’ Guide in print

High-school/college liaison: George Carroll, Virginia Kiesewetter 

  • Contact and negotiate with local high schools and colleges about opportunities to work together at voter-registration and other events
  • Manage volunteers and materials for these events 

Polling-place evaluators: Sarah Matthew 

  • Manage volunteers for the agreement with the County Board of Elections to serve as polling-place evaluators

Legislative breakfast: Ellen West 

  • Organize this annual event that provides an opportunity for members of the public to meet and talk with elected officials who represent Frederick County in the Maryland General Assembly

Fundraising Grant writing: Ellen West, Sarah Matthews

  • Develop fundraising plans to support forums, the Voters’ Guide, ASL interpreters for the deaf, and other such costs for our activities
  • Locate and file applications for grant opportunities

 Voter Education: Jill Griffith 

  • Provide Voter Education via PowerPoint presentations and speakers designed to provide voters information to be a catalyst for change
  • Provide Community Conversations - designed to engage eligible nonvoters to explore reasons they don’t vote and elevate the importance of voting.

Girl Scouts: Karen Paris 

  • Help local Girl Scouts work on their Civics or Democracy Badges.

Observer Corps: Kate Jones 

  • Monitor civic and government actions by attending public meetings and reporting back to the League any issues that the membership may want to address.
  • Recruit volunteers to monitor different government actors to report back to the Board.

Legislative Advocacy: Peggy Durbin

  • Identify and prepare feedback to legislators and government officials through testimony and/or meeting directly to pursue advocating for a League position.
