WASHINGTON – September 2. Today, Celina Stewart, CEO of the League of Women Voters, released the following statement in response to revised policy guidance from US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS):
“LWV is appalled to witness the Tennessee legislature deconstruct representative democracy in our state. Redistricting with the intent of silencing, the voices of the Black and Brown voters of Memphis/Shelby County is in affront to the very founding tenets of America.”
Every day, the freedom to vote is under attack. The League is proud to support the reintroduction of the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (JLVRAA), vital legislation that is needed to fully restore and modernize the VRA and ensure that discriminatory voting policies are stopped in their tracks. Tell your members of Congress to protect the freedom to vote and support the passage of the JLVRAA. Equality — and our democracy — cannot wait.
