We had a full crowd for a lively and informative discussion about Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) on Wednesday, Nov. 29, 6:30 - 8 pm., at the C. Burr Artz Library Community Room. The LWVFC sponsored this public forum to educate our members, our elected officials, and the public.

According to the nonpartisan organization FairVote, "RCV is straightforward.Voters have the option to rank candidates in order of preference: first, second, third and so forth. Ballots that do not help voters’ top choices win count for their next choice.

"It works in all types of elections and supports more representative outcomes. RCV means better choices, better campaigns, and  better representation. That’s why it’s the fastest growing nonpartisan voting reform in the nation."

The League invited a variety of experts to talk on the subject so that you can reach your own conclusions about the desirability and efficacy of Ranked Choice Voting:

  • Barbara Wagner, Director, Frederick County Board of Elections
  • Jeremy Rose, Evidence & Learning Manager, FairVote
  • Walter Olson, Cato Institute Senior Fellow; author on numerous legal, public policy, and regulation topics
  • Sara Malec, Associate Professor of Mathematics, Hood College
  • Stuart Harvey, Frederick City Charter Review Committee member; retired director, Frederick County Board of Elections
