League of Women Voters Plans Forum on Ranked Choice Voting

Ever wonder if there are ways of electing political leaders other than by simple majority? If so, the League of Women Voters of Frederick County is offering information on another option. The League plans to host a forum on Ranked Choice Voting at the C. Burr Artz Library in downtown Frederick.

Ranked Choice Voting is a method of selecting candidates whereby voters indicate their first, second, and third choices. If no candidate receives at least 50 percent of the votes, the candidate with the lowest number of votes is dropped, and voters’ second choices are then assigned to the remaining candidates. This process repeats until a candidate with an absolute majority emerges.

The League has invited a variety of experts to talk on the subject so that you can reach your own conclusions about the desirability and efficacy of Ranked Choice Voting:

  • Barbara Wagner, Director, Frederick County Board of Elections
  • Jeremy Rose, Evidence & Learning Manager, FairVote
  • Walter Olson, Cato Institute Senior Fellow; author on numerous legal, public policy, and regulation topics
  • Sara Malec, Associate Professor of Mathematics, Hood College
  • Stuart Harvey, Frederick City Charter Review Committee member; retired director, Frederick County Board of Elections

The forum will take place on November 29 in the library’s Community Room from 6:30 to 8 pm. The library is located at 110 East Patrick Street in Frederick, Maryland. For information on viewing this event later online, see the League’s website at Public Forum on Ranked Choice Voting | MyLO (lwv.org).
