If you've attended Action Workshops in the past, you know that Action Workshops are aimed at breaking down the League's legislative priorities for the upcoming session and empowering League members to support the LWVWA Lobby Team's advocacy. This year, however, there is an unusual amount of uncertainty ahead of the session—and this uncertainty has shaped 2024's Action Workshop into something a little different.
We'll head into the session with a forecasted revenue shortfall—potentially made much worse if the four ballot initiatives pass. This makes any revenue projections uncertain. Also, many of the incumbents in our legislature chose not to run for re-election this year, so on top of budget uncertainties there are potentially big changes in the legislative leadership on the horizon as well. This creates very different politics than usual and requires a different approach from us because we can't choose policy priorities as easily.
In response, the Lobby Team has decided to adapt our “usual” Action Workshop into something a little different this year. The Team will be focusing on the ways local Leagues and individual members can gear up and have a strong impact during WA's legislative session, despite the uncertainties.
Join us on Saturday, October 19 from 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM for this year's workshop! It will be held via Zoom and will feature our Lobby Team as well as a conversation with two experienced Senators from our legislature—who will share their expectations for an unusual upcoming session. This year's Action Workshop will also include League member focus groups where local Leagues can share their legislative priorities, and a sneak peek at what's to come with our Speak-Up School in January
