National Voter Registration Day is a national holiday celebrating our democracy. It was first observed in 2012 and has been growing in popularity every year since. Held on the fourth Tuesday of September, National Voter Registration Day will be observed on Tuesday, September 25th this year. The holiday has been endorsed by the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS). It is further supported by the National Association of State Election Directors (NASED).
The LWVUS is a national partner with NRVD, and the League in Vermont is observing it in several venues, though not always on the 25th.
Most exciting is a state League program headed by LWVCEN member Madeline Motta, who has organized a voter registration drive at VT state prisons in Newport on the 24th and Springfield on the 27th. Vermont and Maine are the only states who allow felons to vote while incarcerated, and many take the franchise away from felons permanently.
The Champlain Valley League is partnering with Phoenix books to register voters in Burlington, Essex and Rutland, and LWVCEN members will register students at Norwhich University on Sept. 20. Thanks to all our members who are partici-pating in this big effort.
