For the first time since 2009, the June Carmichael Award for outstanding service to the League was presented, to Karen Bufka from the Northeast Kingdom group. The citation read as follows: “Founding member of the Northeast Kingdom Unit of the League of Women Voters of Vermont, which under her leadership grew to 25 new members in one year; Organized Candidate Forums; Worked with the Town Clerk on Get Out the Vote efforts; Maximized League visibility through tabling at community events; Worked with St. Johnsbury Atheneum and local access television to produce programs for community education.”

Maisie Wood of the new Castleton group was also recognized for their outstanding voter service work in the last election cycle. They prepared a Town Meeting Voter’s Guide which appeared in the Rutland Herald and was available for local residents. This is a first for Castleton. They provided transportation to the polls and register voters. These have both been "institutionalized" and are ongoing projects. They have also registered new citizens to vote following naturalization ceremonies in Rutland and other area locations.

Congratulations to Karen and Maisie. Your leadership is an inspiration.
