Leagues of Women Voters Responds to House Investigation into Election Misinformation

by Shannon Augustus

WASHINGTON — Today the League of Women Voters of the United States CEO Virginia Kase Solomón issued the following statement on the House Oversight and Reform and House Administration Committees’ investigation into election disinformation in Arizona, Florida, Ohio, and Texas:

“The American people, and especially disenfranchised communities, are constantly bombarded with false and misleading information about our election system, public policies, and government actions. These falsehoods fuel attacks that sow distrust in our democratic processes, resulting in the insurrection that we saw on January 6th.

“The League of Women Voters welcomes the work of this congressional investigation to address the false narratives regarding our elections. Until these issues are addressed, we will continue to see attacks on voting rights based on lies. We encourage individual states to work with the committees to investigate this threat to our democracy.

“At the League, we are dedicated to empowering voters through education about our elections, and we support any action that would allow all voters to participate in our democracy fully. In the past, we supported the Honest Ads Act, which helped prevent interference in future elections and improve the transparency of online political ads.

“Voters deserve the truth about who is trying to influence our elections, and in the face of ongoing threats to our democracy, we support the work of the House Oversight and Reform and House Administration Committees and call for their findings to be made public.

“Through our work in communities to promote tools like VOTE411.org, the League of Women Voters is committed to mitigating the spread of falsehoods by building trust in our elections and spreading trustworthy election information to the American people.”
