County Charter

County Charter

Adopted 1968, Updated 1974

The Leagues of Women Voters of Santa Clara County supports the principles of the county charter.  To achieve the stated position, the county charter should provide:

  • Strong manager form of government, the short ballot, clearly drawn lines of responsibility and authority.
  • The present method of representation:  Five supervisors elected from districts based on population.  There should be mandatory redistricting after each federal decennial census with public hearings on the proposed changes in district boundaries prior to adoption.
  • Periodic review of the charter.  Obsolete and conflicting material should be deleted.  The charter should define the general structure and operation of government.  Proposed changes should go to the votes at a regularly scheduled election.
