When Americans are asked what unites them, an increasingly common answer is “nothing.” Amid extreme partisan polarization, trust in government institutions hovers near record lows and a large majority of Americans believe their values are under attack. Presented by the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, this program will bring together a distinguished panel of experts to examine how the rights and responsibilities of American citizenship are connected and how they might be used to create a greater sense of common purpose.

We will also be welcoming League members and high school teachers from around the country to participate in the ENCORE Community Case Discussion centered around a pivotal debate at the Constitutional Convention of 1787:
- Should the federal government have veto power over state laws?
- How much power - and what kind of power - should the federal government have over states?
