The 56th biennial national LWV convention took place June 27 – 30. There were over 1,200 attendees (in person and online) from all 50 states, Washington D.C. and the Virgin Islands. From LWVAC, Stefanie Gadalean and Ronnie Loveler attended in person and Candy Birch, Diane Dimperio and Janice Garry attended virtually. We learned so much! Stefanie, who is our UF Chapter president, raved about the experience and encouraged everybody to attend in person in 2026. For the first time, all expenses were paid by our League for each attendee.
The speakers and leadership at the convention were diverse, intelligent, patient and inspiring. The keynote address was by Kim Teehee, director of government relations for the Cherokee Nation. Due to the sudden death of our stellar, luminous, Black president, Dr. Deborah Turner, Sania Irwin, the first east Asian president stepped into the role for the remaining term. The people at the podium reflected the people in our communities.
One of the important tasks at the convention is the election of new leadership. Dianna Wynn is the new president. She had a calm presence with focused intellect. She said, “A bigger, bolder, more powerful League of Women Voters can shape the future of our democracy.” A notable speaker was the new CEO, Celina Stewart, who has worked as chief counsel. My sense at the convention was that the LWV is energizing for a new era. Listen to Ms. Stewart’s rousing speech and you’ll see what I mean.
Be proud to be a LWV member. You’re in exceptional company. As the motto of the convention said we, “Turn up and turn out.” We’ve been organizing, defending democracy and empowering voters for over 100 years. The League is strong. We adapt. We’re working on the next 100 years. Stay with us!
