LWVAC now has two affiliated college chapters! The University of Florida and Santa Fe College LWV groups received two of the four available grants from LWVFL for chartering.

Santa Fe College

At Santa Fe College (SFC), the Chapter President is Gianna Rivera and the Faculty Advisor is Linda Mussillo. The group tables at SF events with games and activities for students and attendees. One such activity was a scavenger hunt related to banned books. The table display included facts about book bans in Florida along with a basket of banned books that really made an impression on those who visited the table. (A biography of Jackie Robinson and Amanda Gorman’s poetry are among the books people were appalled to discover had been banned.) The group is growing and looking forward to a busy fall and election season, including a Rock-the-Vote event, among others. If you know a SFC student who may be interested in getting involved, please have them info [at] lwv-alachua.org (contact Gianna).

University of Florida

The University of Florida (UF) chapter president is Stefanie Gadaleon and the faculty advisor is Diana Boxer. The group had a great first semester and are looking forward a busy fall and election season. If you know a UF student who may be interested in getting involved, please have them contact info [at] lwv-alachua.org (Stefanie).

By Stefanie Gadalean: I had the amazing opportunity to go with the League of Women Voters to Alabama the first weekend in March to commemorate the 59th anniversary of Bloody Sunday. During that time, we had the pleasure of attending the Martin and Coretta Scott King Jubilee Breakfast, the NAACP Bridge Crossing Banquet, a Southern Poverty Law Center event with John Lewis‘ nephew and Congresswoman Nikema Williams, and the Equal Justice Initiative's museums and memorials. I had the opportunity to speak at a joint event with the Alabama League of Women Voters and the NAACP on youth civic engagement.
