ACTION ALERT: REGISTER YOUR OPPOSITION TO SRJ101

Take action by contacting members of the Senate State Affairs Committee IMMEDIATELY to register their opposition to this bill, which would make it basically impossible to get a citizen-led initiative or referendum on the ballot. Testimony on SJR101 will be heard on February 7, 2025 in Senate State Affairs Committee at 7:00 am PT/8:00 am MT. The League of Women Voters of Idaho takes action on an issue or advocates for a cause when there is an existing League position that supports the issue or speaks to the cause. Get involved!

THE THREAT

SJR101 proposes a state constitutional amendment that maintains the same TOTAL number of signatures currently required to get an initiative or referendum on the ballot, BUT it will ALSO require signatures from a minimum of 6% of legal voters at the last general election from EVERY SINGLE ONE of the 35 legislative districts in the state! If passed by the Legislature, this resolution will be placed on the November 2026 General Election ballot and voters will ultimately decide whether to adopt the resolution.

If in Boise, attend the committee hearing at 7:00 am PT/8:00 am MT. The more bodies there registering opposition, the better. Arrive early (West Wing Room 55).

GENERAL TALKING POINTS

  • It is already difficult enough to get a citizen-led initiative or referendum on the ballot and this further requirement will make it nearly impossible.
  • A similar law was passed in 2021 by the legislature (Bill S1110) and the Idaho Supreme Court declared, unanimously, that it was unconstitutional.
