Alternative Voting Methods Briefing

Alternative Voting Methods
Monday, January 8, 2024 - 2:00pm

Please join the LWVID for a briefing from a League “sister” and national expert on Alternative Voting Methods. We are honored to host Celeste Landry for this educational event as different voting methods becomes a topic for discussion in our state.

Celeste Landry is the facilitator of the LWV of Colorado’s Alternative Voting Methods Task Force. She has been studying and engaging with people locally, nationally and internationally on voting methods for more than a decade and has conducted many participatory elections using different voting methods. The LWV of Colorado and Celeste were major forces in improving and adopting the LWVUS position on electoral systems in 2020 and as a League lobbyist, Celeste has worked with legislators on voting methods legislation. Celeste was born in Paraguay to American parents, grew up in Louisiana and has Math and Operations research degree from colleges in California and Washington, D.C. She has lived in France, China, Bahrain, Italy, India and England and taught in Boston and Westchester County, New York.

Celeste will brief on rank-choice voting, the advantages and disadvantages and the experience of the LWV of Utah with the method.  She will describe issues with the nomenclature, potential usage of the LWVUS position, and what she sees as League trends including support for proportional representation. She will also share the existing state position of the LWV of CO and their current study both of which could be very useful to our League.
