The League of Women Voters of Idaho (LWVID), a nonpartisan organization, is rolling out a public education drive on April 29th for the upcoming legislative and congressional reapportionment. The LWV People Powered Fair Maps Campaign advocates for fair political maps throughout our nation. As a partner in this campaign, LWVID is focusing on civic education and encouraging public involvement.
Reapportionment is the process in which congressional and legislative districts are drawn to determine how communities are represented based on the most current census data. Idaho will use the 2020 census to equalize the population of districts by changing political boundaries. Changes in boundaries may change our political representation and will determine legislation that affects our lives.
The bipartisan Idaho Citizen Commission for Reapportionment is composed of six members who are not Idaho elected or appointed officials. The commission’s objective is to develop a district map that prioritizes equal population and fair representation. The commission must complete the mapmaking process within 90 days. Learn how you can draw your own maps to submit to the commission and be involved.
