The government shutdown, the second longest in our history, is creating consequences, some quite intentional, which are inflicting pain on Americans.

On Nov. 1, more than 650,000 Missourians will temporarily lose access to their November SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits. The government's funding is currently stalled in the shutdown, with parties locked in impasse.

Missourians have strict income, asset and work requirements to qualify for SNAP. Nearly 40% of the SNAP recipients nationwide are children 17 and younger; about 20% are seniors aged 60 and older; and the remaining 40% are adults aged 18 to 59. In short, those who will suffer if SNAP benefits end are the poor, disabled, and elderly.

Employees at food banks and food pantries are already strained and are bracing for the demand after Nov. 1 if the government remains closed and benefits are not continued. Food banks and pantries supply 10% of the food that people who receive SNAP benefits receive. Providing the other 90% is Herculean at best.

Every Missourian should consider a donation to a food  bank immediately to meet the needs of the hungry. Please consider donating to St. Louis Area Foodbank at stlfoodbank.org, Operation Food Search at operationfoodsearch.org, or Food Outreach at foodoutreach.org.

On Nov. 1, the impact will be huge for Missouri families in need. Elected officials need to hear from Missourians about the impact their decisions are having on everyday life.
