Position

While this November’s ballot will not contain any initiatives, it will include one referendum, Ref. 90. This referendum will ask voters to approve or reject ESSB 5395 (Comprehensive Sexual Health Education), which passed the legislature and was signed by Governor Jay Inslee in March 2020. The LWVWA recommends a vote to approve ESSB 5395 on the ballot.

Position

The LWV of Washington recently signed on to a letter to the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) requesting that the U.S. Navy reduce the threat to southern resident orcas during weapon system testing and training proposed in this orca habitat. Orcas are the largest dolphin species, and the southern residents live along the Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia coasts.

We are committed to ensuring that all voters are able to safely and securely cast their ballot during the COVID-19 pandemic. We want to support individuals and community partners who are also committed to this work! New strategies are needed to register voters and get out the vote in 2020, because in-person registration events and candidate forums are much more difficult.

We are developing an array of resources to inform and mobilize voters for the 2020 elections,
including virtual candidates forums and this Get-Out-the Vote toolkit.
