Every year, LWV - Whitewater Area recognizes one citizen for their efforts to improve the Whitewater community. We present exemplary citizens with the Making Democracy Work award during a public ceremony.
The League designed the Making Democracy Work award in 2010 to honor individual’s civil work in our community. The first Making Democracy Work award also commemorated the 90th anniversary of the league’s foundation and the passage of the 19th amendment.
Because so many Whitewater citizens deserve this recognition, we continued this annual tribute and preserve the lasting value it creates. Recently, we expanded our outreach to include nominations from our wider service areas, Walworth and Jefferson counties.
In selecting each year's honoree, the League looks for individuals who have shared and implemented a vision of making their community a safer and fairer place in which to live and those who have mobilized others to work with them to affect positive change. These values exemplify the spirit and the mission of the League. Nominations are submitted from the League's membership to the board, which, through consensus, makes the final selection. Honorees are invited along with one guest to attend a public reception held in their honor. They are presented with a unique certificate, and speeches are made in their honor from those who have worked alongside them.
