Position In Brief:

TRANSPORTATION

Support for an improved system of transportation for all

The League of Women Voters of Oklahoma (LWVOK) believes that development of transit and transportation systems should be environmentally responsible and should provide adequate access to affordable transportation for all citizens. In order to reduce highway congestion, fuel consumption, and vehicular pollution, and to provide better access to housing, jobs, recreation and medical care, the LWVOK advocates the development and maintenance of energy- and time-efficient public transportation systems within and between communities in Oklahoma and the region. Priority should be given to government-funded transportation projects that are directed toward better public access to fuel-efficient transportation and the reduction of single occupancy vehicles on the roadways. The LWVOK also believes that the development of efficient and affordable transportation that links citizens across our state and neighboring states is important to the future of our state. The ability of children and adults in rural and urban areas to have the means to access needed services and to attend activities and community events is crucial in developing a sense of community in local areas and across our state.
