In 2021 we’ve already seen the power of energized voters.  Join the League of Women Voters of Montgomery County on Tuesday, Jan. 19th at 11 a.m. on Zoom to hear a state League report on Voter Suppression and Ranked Choice Voting.

Members of the State League’s Election Laws Position Committee will report on Part II of their year-long study to us on Jan. 19th. You as local League members will then discuss and vote on their recommendations. The Zoom link is below.

Ranked choice voting is gaining national attention and popularity as a means of reducing partisan divides and divisive campaigning.  Ranked choice voting allows voters to rank candidates on their ballot in order of preference.  If no candidate receives 50 percent of the vote, the candidate with the fewest first-place votes is eliminated, and ballots cast for that candidate are ‘transferred’ to second choices as indicated on voters' ballots. This process of transferring votes continues until one of the candidates has a majority.”3

In Virginia, we now elected candidate by plurality – whoever wins the largest share of the vote wins the election.  Members of the study committee will explain the pros and cons of ranked choice voting for Virginia.

The committee also studied voter suppression and will discuss Virginia’s long history of voter suppression, our current laws and suggested solutions that will increase voter participation.

Come join us and learn about these two important aspects of voting in our state and share your impressions and recommendations on the study.
