Virginia was the first permanent English colony (est. 1607), the 10th state admitted to the Union on June 25, 1788, with an estimated population of more than 8.8 million, and an area of 42,775 square miles. Virginia's state legislature, the Virginia General Assembly, established in July 1619, is the oldest extant law-making body in North America.
