Two bills of great concern remain during the final two weeks of the General Assembly 2024 session. Please urge your senators to oppose H.4624 Gender Transition Under 18 and H.5118 Rollback of Public Protections in Utility Regulation (Canadys gas plant.) H.4624 has been set for special order and could be heard as soon as Tuesday. H.5118 is currently stalled on the Senate calendar but could rear its ugly head during these last weeks.

South Carolina lawmakers passed a dangerous abortion ban that is now in effect, banning abortion before most people even know they’re pregnant. This ban has had devastating consequences on the pregnant people of our state. We must show our strength in numbers and demand the legislature repeal this discriminatory law.

On February 15, the House Constitutional Laws Subcommittee of the Judiciary Committee will take up H. 3676, a “Convention of States” bill with the specific focus of passing a balanced budget amendment to the U. S. Constitution. This bill is a threat to every American's constitutional rights and civil liberties. The League opposes a federal budget amendment, although we support fiscal responsibility.

Amend SC 43-170The extremely broad language of SC Regulation 43.170 Uniform Procedure for Selection/Reconsideration of Instructional Materials supports the dangerous removal of hundreds of books and threatens the free flow of ideas and information.

Important bills affecting voting and elections are scheduled for the Constitutional Laws Subcommittee of the House Judiciary Committee on Thursday, January 25, at 9 AM in the Blatt Building, Room 516. We are especially asking constituents of subcommittee members to reach out to their House members to SUPPORT instant runoff or ranked choice voting and to REJECT bills that unrealistically and substantially increase the administrative burden on county election offices.

The State Board of Education is considering a rule that states “Instruction material is not 'age and developmentally appropriate' for any age or age group of children if it includes descriptions or visual depictions of 'sexual conduct.'"

By February 12, phone or email your representative(s) on the SC Board of Education. Please urge your them to permit older students access to age-appropriate sexual education content for instructional purposes.
