Our annual meeting will feature honored journalist, Dwayne Yancey, as speaker.
Yancey is editorial writer and founding editor of Cardinal News, a nonprofit digital news service, launched in September 2021. Cardinal News has become the essential news and editorial site for Southwest and Southern Virginia. Yancey’s editorials on the crisis of crumbling public school buildings, Virginia politics, and elections are insightful and bipartisan.
Yancey, a Virginia native, worked for The Roanoke Times for 39 years in various roles, including editorial writer. He has won the Virginia Press Association’s D. Lathan Mims Award for Editorial Leadership twice and is a member of the Virginia Communications Hall of Fame. His book, When Hell Froze Over: The Untold Story of Doug Wilder: A Black Politician’s Rise to Power in the South, covers former Virginia Gov. Douglas Wilder’s campaign to become the first Black Governor.
We will also hear an update on redistricting from co-vice president Peggy Layne. Peggy attended almost all the meetings of the Virginia Redistricting Commission. She is also a member of LWV-Virginia's Redistricting Committee. She was featured in a 30-minute radio conversation on redistricting in January 2022.
Following these informative talks, we will hold our annual business meeting, including election of officers and approval of the budget.
