Report from the 66th UN Commission on the Status of Women
By Kathleen Montgomery
CSW66 took place in New York City and virtually, March 14-25, 2022. The priority theme was “Achieving Gender Equality and the Empowerment of All Women and Girls in the Context of Climate Change — Environment and Disaster Risk Reduction Policies and Programs”
The League of Women Voters of the United States organized a CSW66 parallel event entitled, “Climate Change Threats to Democratic Elections: Preparing for the Worst.” This inspiring event included local, national, and international speakers, with expertise in ensuring that elections are free and fair. All speakers emphasized the importance of making contingency plans in the event of natural disasters during election season. These included identifying vulnerabilities and enhancing communication with multiple stakeholders (i.e., voters, first responders, utility companies, and tech companies).
