Dear Members,

Remember in Mary Poppins when the wind changes and things blow about and then, magically (because that is what the story is all about) she arrives on an umbrella at the doorstep of the Banks’ home? Well, the wind seems to be shifting with COVID, so let’s have some fun!

The Hippodrome Theater has a new show, Running Mates. It’s a comedy about a husband and wife running for the same political office. Our league is going to give away two free tickets to lucky members. Who are going to be the lucky winners? The first two people who answer the questions below correctly!

Furthermore, we are making Running Mates our first social event of the year. Let’s go see the show on Sunday, October 16 at 2 PM. In the seating chart, perhaps choose a seat in Section A (right "side peak", where tickets are $20 - $50). I just booked seat D11. We all need a good laugh about politics! After the show, if you are so inclined, let’s hop next door to Maude’s Café. Fall should be in the air and we can enjoy outdoor seating and the company of fellow leaguers while having tasty treats. Spouses, partners, and friends are welcome!

The first two people who send me the correct answers (which can be found in the newsletter) to the following questions will win a free ticket to Running Mates:

  1. What open position on the board needs an eager volunteer to step forward?
  2. What is the date of the League and Bob Graham Center general election candidate forum?
  3. Who is the chair(s) of the Natural Resources Committee?

On another topic, David Moritz, Director of the North Florida Region of the Florida Rights of Nature Network, Inc., will be joining our board meeting on September 27 at 5:30 PM to inform us of the effort to create a Florida constitutional amendment for the Right to Clean and Healthy Waters. Current laws do not adequately protect Florida’s waters, resulting in lessened spring flow, inadequate water recharging sites, and algae blooms. Therefore, there is an effort to prioritize water quality through the constitution. All league members are invited to attend by Zoom. If you would like to hear about this important topic, info [at] lwv-alachua.org (send me an email) for the Zoom link.

In League,
Janice
