Event Recap: Immigration Law & Changing Policies — A Conversation with Attorney Robert H. Cohen. Hosted by LWVMC Advocacy & Education • November 13, 2025

Cohen outlined how family, employment, and humanitarian pathways work, explained what it takes to become a U.S. citizen, and broke down recent executive orders, travel bans, and the rollback of refugee and humanitarian programs. He also highlighted ongoing court challenges and the growing tension between executive authority and constitutional protections.

Participants gained clarity on:

  • How birthright citizenship is being challenged in the courts
  • New travel and visa restrictions
  • The suspension of refugee resettlement and TPS programs
  • Increased enforcement and detention trends
  • The impact on Ohio communities, including Ukrainians, Haitians, Venezuelans, and others

Cohen emphasized that immigration policy is ultimately shaped by public engagement and voting. He encouraged attendees to stay informed, verify information, support local service organizations, and contact elected officials.

His closing message was simple and urgent: “Knowledge is power — and voting is the most powerful action we can take.”
