Shaping the Future of Solano Count

On February 28, 2026, more than 80 interested community members gathered at the Solano Center for Innovation for an energizing Lunch and Learn event. This was Town Hall designed to engage in civic dialogue about the Shaping the Future of Solano County. The setting was fitting because innovation emerged as a central theme as local leaders discussed bold solutions to the challenges facing our county.
The program opened with a brief update on the impactful work of the League of Women Voters, highlighting its efforts locally and at the state and national levels to protect voting rights and strengthen democracy. Attendees were also invited to an upcoming Zoom event, “Be in the Know”, that will focus on the SAVE Act and other proposed legislation and policy changes that could affect voter registration and voter access. The distinguished panel featured John Garamendi, Lori Wilson, Christopher Cabaldon, and Wanda Williams. Each leader shared perspectives on the most pressing issues facing Solano County — from economic development and infrastructure to housing affordability and public safety — and outlined the steps they are taking to address them.
When asked how elected officials at every level can work together to safeguard California’s election laws and systems, the panelists emphasized collaboration, transparency, and vigilance. They spoke about protecting public trust in elections while ensuring that access to the ballot remains secure and equitable. John Gardner, Assistant Registrar of Voters, and his team from Solano County were present to help people check their registration status and to register new voters.
The discussion also touched on the proposed California Forever development and its potential impact on Solano County, as well as strategies to expand meaningful job opportunities that strengthen families and communities. Throughout the event, panelists returned to a common theme: innovation must guide how Solano County grows — economically, environmentally, and democratically.
The dialogue between audience members and elected officials was respectful, engaging, and forward-looking — a powerful reminder that democracy thrives when citizens show up. We are living in challenging times. The issues before us — housing affordability, the strength of our schools, economic uncertainty, and protecting our democratic institutions are complex and, at times, daunting.
But what gives me hope is the willingness of neighbors to come together, to listen, to ask thoughtful questions, and to stay engaged. That spirit is what has always carried Solano County forward.
If we work together as residents, community leaders, and elected officials we can ensure adequate and affordable housing for families, maintain strong and well-supported schools for our children, and create continued opportunities for growth and prosperity for all who call this county home. Thriving communities are not built by government alone; they are built by informed, active citizens who care deeply about their future. The work will not be easy but acquiring things of value rarely are. I sincerely believe that we can help Solano County not only face these challenges but rise above them and continue to grow, innovate, and thrive for generations to come.
