Unite and Rise

Unite and Rise

On September 5, Cheryl Roller and I joined hundreds from Columbus, Cincinnati and Springfield for a Peace Walk organized by Indivisible Springfield and rededicated to Pierre Damas Bel. Pierre was a 20-year-old Haitian immigrant, honors graduate, soccer player, ROTC student and Wright State University student. After losing immigration protection, he was required to wear a GPS ankle monitor and publicly described feeling ashamed and humiliated. His death days later brought grief to his family and community. Our decision to walk became both civic and personal—a reflection on immigration, human dignity, nonviolence, and what it means to unite and rise together.
