What are Observers?
The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan political organization, encourages the informed and active participation of citizens in government and seeks to influence public policy through education and advocacy.
An Observer Corps helps meet this mission. By regular attendance at public meetings of governmental agencies, Observer Corps members keep elected officials aware of the League’s interest in local government and help inform League members through their reports of those meetings.
What are the objectives of Observers?
- Increase visibility and strengthen communication between the League and local governmental bodies.
- Enable League members to become better informed regarding the decision-making process in local government
- Gather information and identify issues, trends, and problems in the community in order to assess the relationship to the LWV program.
- Increase the visibility and enhance the image of the League as an organization interested in responsible government that is responsive to the will of the people.
What do Observers do?
- Observers attend local government meetings. Some meetings are in-person only while others are recorded and may be viewed at a later date.
- Observers write a report of the meeting. An easy-to-use template is available for this task.
- Observers submit their reports to the Observer Corps Director with recommendations for action by the Board. Observers also provide information on issues pertinent to the Board.
