An informed electorate is essential to democracy. Over the past 20 years the number of local newspapers in the U.S. has declined by 30% resulting in reduced civic engagement, increased partisanship and less public oversight of state, local and county governments, as well as school boards.  We will discuss the development of this issue as well as what is being done to address the issue.
